In this article, we have dug through the record books in order to rank Liverpool’s six most prolific penalty takers.
1. Steven Gerrard with 47 penalties scored
2. Jan Molby with 42 penalties scored
Jan Molby said that his tip was to wait for the goalkeeper to move one side, and then he stuck the ball the other one. It seemed so simple for the Great Dane. And the fact is that Molby missed only three penalties in his Liverpool shirt. He even netted a hat-trick in a single game at Coventry City during a League Cup tie in 1986.
3. Phil Neal with 38 penalties scored
Phil Neal is the first Liverpool player to have ever scored a penalty within the 90 minutes in a European Cup final. Neal is the club’s most decorated player and also a full-back by trade.
4. Billy Liddell with 34 penalties scored
Just two minutes after netting his first penalty for Liverpool against Middlesbrough, Billy Liddell took another but ended up missing. However, that was just a rarity through the striker’s goal-littered career.
5. Tommy Smith with 22 penalties scored
In spite of his status as a defender, Tommy Smith more than gladly took responsibility from the penalty spot.
6. Robbie Fowler with 20 penalties scored
Perhaps the most famous spot-kick of Robbie Fowler is the one that he didn’t want and had saved. In 1997, at a game with Arsenal, Liverpool was awarded a penalty as goalkeeper David Seaman was adjudged to have brought Fowler down inside the box. Sportingly, Fowler insisted to the referee that there was no foul and he would later be commanded by UEFA for such a gesture. With the decision made, Fowler stepped up. However, he witnessed his effort palmed away by Seaman. Luckily, Jason McAteer converted the rebound in a 2-1 win.
